Although the audience was a small one for this final social evening of 2015, a good time was had by all! The quiz presented challenges including historical, musical and general knowledge as well as some slightly trickier “memorable years” and “composers’ anagrams” questions. Congratulations to the worthy winners and to all who took part. The evening concluded with a delicious buffet and a glass of wine! The committee would like to wish all members, past and present, and visitors a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy 2016.

We attended the most recent concert at the Rotunda – a solo recital by painist Maureen Galea. A passionate, powerful and technically flawless account was given by Maureen of pieces by composers of Czech origin and Beethoven. Full of energy and equipped with an extensive toolkit of expressive touches, she gave us a thoroughly enjoyable evening on the School’s immaculate Steinway. Her performance was made the more edifying by well-researched comments on each piece. Hopefully this kind of championing of less prominent but still worthy composers alongside the standards, will help extend the reach of the excellent Portsmouth Music Club events to a younger audience.

The music club anniversary concert presented by The Grier Trio at the Rotunda on 9 February proved, once again, to be a memorable evening! Savitri and Indira were a real treat both aurally and visually. Beautiful, delicate sounds from Savitri’s violin in the Bartok, not usually a composer I would choose to listen to, and Indira’s cello sound was haunting and dramatic in the Brahms Sonata. At times I did feel their father, Francis’s piano sound masked the stringed instruments but in the second half the Schubert from the full trio was hypnotic and enthralling! Thank you to you all and I am sure these two young musicians will continue to achieve highly! Christine Austin

We attended the AGM yesterday evening and were very pleased we did! So much new information about the exciting future plans and expansion ideas was imparted by the Committee and in particular the Chairman, Diana. Thank you sincerely to all the Committee for their hard work over another successful, musical year. Long may you continue to inspire, enable and support musicians at all levels and genres. We look forward to being part of the club as it continues to achieve a higher profile and provides high quality, affordable entertainment for all lovers of classical music. Christine and Michael Austin
